In 1891 Mr Frederick Shepherd, a blacksmith and farrier,
of 53 Lafone Street, Horeslydown, took out a patent for
'an improved slip hook for instantly releasing a
fallen horse from the shafts or pole of a waggon or
cart'
.   This patent was subsequently sold to Courage
and Co. by Mr Shepherd - see
